Vila Franca do Campo, São Miguel, Azores
For the eighth edition of the Azorean Walk&Talk art festival, the studio organized, in collaboration with the Italian architect Mariella Gentile, from Camposaz collective, a self-construction workshop on a 1:1 scale.
The Camposaz collective is known for its in-situ collaborative approach. For 10 days and in a team of 10, we designed and created an ephemeral installation, aimed at enhancing the landscape. The project is located in the south coast of the island of São Miguel in front of the lhéu of Vila Franca do Campo.
The installation offers the visitor the observation of the landscape in an alternative way. Four modules attempt to sequence the notion of landscape through the senses; hearing, smell, touch and sight are then solicited. You can pass through them, climb on them, and rest on them while listening to the sound of the ocean and the wind.
The structures are built in local Cryptomeria wood and are founded by lime agglomerate, in order to provide a better resistance to local weather, while allowing its ecological degradation over time.
Up to a height of 4 meters, a set of platforms is installed at different distances from the ground, creating a rhythm and a progressive growth of sensory points of view.
When the wind blows, the movement of the natural fabric used as sun protection expresses the link between man, ocean and land.
The project thus proposes a mise en abyme of the island, which is then perceived as an open system, a welcoming scheme, like a step in a long journey. Révéler is a point of contact; it encourages the public to share local stories and memories while discovering an exceptional panorama.
It is the starting point, calling for new perspectives.
