mono
550 m2 — october 2019
R. Feio Terenas, Lisboa
mono lisboa is an artist-run-space launched in October 2019, in the centre of Lisbon. With approximately 550 m2, it includes an exhibition space, studio spaces, and an art residency.
The project takes place in an old garage on 2 levels leaning against the hill of Penha de França. This particular situation offers an unexpected relationship with the city. The project proposes to transform this garage into a bright and fluid space while preserving the identity of the building.
Under a visible shuttered concrete slab, the coatings of the architectural elements play with the light of the space. The post-beam structure is reinforced with a white painting; electricity and plumbing elements are left in sight in their existing state and blend into it.
The light grey epoxy floor reflects the space and dematerializes the place, later the exhibited works will benefit from this echo.
White curtains are used to separate and hide the studios from the central exhibition space. Its presence brings lightness and fluidity to the space. A garage reinterpretation of the noren, these split curtains marking the entrance to Japanese houses. This is a discrete nod to the owner of the premise’s references.
In this raw material envelope, the metal scenography of the exhibition space is developed, representing an evolving support for artistic events.
Three modules in scaffolding structure offer the space endless possibilities of layout. The spatial composition of these structures adapts to the art space program and opens up new scenographics layout. They are destined to evolve according to the desires or needs. The reversibility of the space is the essence of the project.
The word mono is used in Japanese to designate something physical, tangible, something palpable, but it also gives the idea of an object, of a substance, and emphasizes emotion.
